President John Dramani Mahama has acknowledged the troubling decline in Ghana’s once-dominant sporting achievements in recent years.
Ghana, once renowned for its success in boxing, football, and athletics, now finds itself at a pivotal moment, struggling to retain its competitive edge on both the continental and global levels.
Speaking during the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, Mahama reflected on the country’s proud sporting history, recalling a time when Ghana was a formidable force in various sports.
“Ghana’s sports sector, which once stood as a shining example of excellence within Africa, is now at a critical juncture,” Mahama stated. “Historically, our nation has had remarkable achievements in boxing, football, and athletics. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case.”
This call for reform comes at a crucial time, as the Black Stars prepare for the 2026 World Cup qualification campaign, having missed out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will be hosted in Morocco.
