Ghanaian football legend Abedi Ayew ‘Pele’ has voiced serious concerns about the state of football in the country.

His remarks follow the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after finishing at the bottom of Group F with just three points.

Reflecting on the stark difference between Ghana’s past football glory and its current struggles, Pele, a three-time African Footballer of the Year and part of the 1982 AFCON-winning squad, highlighted the decline in the sport’s prominence locally.

In an interview with Panafricafootball, he urged stakeholders to prioritize rebuilding the sport in Ghana.

“We shouldn’t dwell on the past but look ahead, work hard, and achieve the goals we aspire to,” Pele said.

He emphasized that discipline, organization, and hard work are critical to restoring Ghana’s football to its former glory.

“To be a great football nation, you must work hard and put your house in order to consistently achieve results. That’s the simple formula for success worldwide,” he explained.

Pele also highlighted the unifying power of football, stressing its importance in fostering national cohesion.

“Football plays a vital role in uniting teams and the entire country,” he noted.

With Ghanaian football at a pivotal moment, Pele’s call serves as a powerful reminder for the nation to regroup and rebuild its football legacy.
