Abdul Salam Yakubu Opposes GFA Presidential Term Extension Proposal
President of New Edubiase United FC, Abdul Salam Yakubu, has publicly rejected the proposal to extend the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential term from two to three terms.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ultimate Sports Show, the veteran football administrator questioned both the motive and timing behind the suggested amendment, which is set to be discussed at the upcoming GFA Congress on August 12 in Prampram.
I don’t support a third term, Yakubu stated firmly. Eight years is enough for any GFA President to make an impact.
He also revealed that he has officially written to the GFA, demanding transparency on which clubs submitted the proposal, insisting that such a major change requires broader stakeholder consultation.
The proposed reforms include not just the term extension, but also the appointment of two vice presidents, one of whom must be a woman — a step aimed at boosting gender representation in football governance.
Yakubu, however, maintained that the focus should remain on strengthening structures, not extending tenure.
