Former Ghana Premier League (GPL) Golden Boot winner, Abednego Tetteh, has announced his retirement from Heart of Lions following his strong criticism of the league’s management.

Tetteh recently sparked controversy by calling for the cancellation of the 2024/25 GPL season, accusing the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of mismanaging the league. His remarks came after the league was temporarily suspended following the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as ‘Nana Pooley.’

In a statement posted on his social media, the striker confirmed his departure, saying, “Please accept this letter as a formal notice of my retirement from Heart of Lions.”

Tetteh gained prominence with Bibiani Gold Stars, where he won the GPL Golden Boot after scoring 16 goals in 19 matches. However, his second season with the club was less impressive, as he made only nine appearances and scored once under Coach Frimpong Manso.

Before joining Gold Stars, he had short stints with Faroe Islands club Hoyvik and Ghanaian side King Faisal. He first rose to fame in 2016 with Bechem United, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 23 league games, playing a key role in their FA Cup victory.
