Team Egypt has taken an early lead on the medal table at ongoing African Games happening in Accra. Their strong performance in table tennis, where they won gold in both the men’s and women’s singles titles, has given them an early advantage.
Egypt currently tops the medal table with 36 medals. They have won 20 gold medals, 8 silver medals, and 8 bronze medals.
Algeria occupy the second spot amassing 23 medals so far. Theycurrently have 5 gold medals, 7 silver medals and 11 bronze medals.
Team South Africa follows closely in third position on the medal table. They have won gold medals in multiple events in swimming, one of their strong holds. South Africa has 5 gold medals, 2 silver and 6 bronze medals, adding up to 13 in total.
The top 5 is dominated by the North Africans as Morocco and Tunisia are placed 4th and 5th respectively. Morocco has won 11 medals so far; 2 gold medals, 5 silver and 4 bronze medals. Tunisia in 5th place, has amassed 9 medals; 1 gold, 3 silver and 5bronze.
The first 10 is completed by Nigeria (5 medals), Senegal (5medals), Libya (1 medal), Mauritius (1 medal) and Namibia (1medal).
Ghana, the host nation, is yet to win any medal.
The games are still ongoing though, so it will be interesting to see if Egypt can hold onto the top spot as other countries compete across various sporting events. The competition is sure to be fierce in the days ahead.
