La Liga: Villarreal vs Barcelona Set for Potential Historic Clash in Miami
Spanish football could be on the verge of making history, with Villarreal’s upcoming La Liga fixture against Barcelona in December potentially becoming the first European league match to be staged outside the continent.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has given the green light to plans for the game to be held at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, pending approval from UEFA and FIFA. The venue is already set to host seven matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Originally slated for Villarreal’s Estadio de la Cerámica on 21 December, the match could instead take place a day earlier, on 20 December 2025, in the United States.
While Spanish and Italian Super Cups have been taken overseas before, this would mark an unprecedented move for a regular-season European league match.
