Former Ghana midfielder Kenneth Sarpong is unhappy with Andre Ayew’s recent omission from the Black Stars, saying a patriotic player like him should not be treated badly.

Ayew has been out of the Black Stars since June, missing out in both 2026 World Cup qualifiers and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers respectively.

The former West Ham United star was recently excluded from the double-header against Sudan, where Ghana managed just a point.

Ghana played out a 0-0 draw at the Accra Sports Stadium, followed by a 2-0 defeat at the Benina Martyrs Stadium in Libya.

The result leave the Black Stars on the verge of failing to qualify for the CAF’s biggest tournament for the first time since 2004.

Speaking to Kessben FM, the former Hearts of Oak midfielder criticized how the former Swansea City star is being treated as captain of the Black Stars.

“A patriotic player like Andre Ayew does not deserve bad treatment” he said.

“Andre Ayew being on the bench will not cause any problems at Black Stars camp. His presence in the team will be extra motivation. He knows how to motivate players when the going gets tough. It will be better to have him back in the team” he said.

Ayew will be hoping to make a return to the Black Stars team after recently securing a move to Le Havre and playing actively.

The Black Stars will return to action in November to face Niger and Angola in the final round of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
