Former Black Stars striker Eric Bekoe has called on current players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL) to show more commitment and consistency if the league is to regain its former glory and attract much-needed sponsorships.
In an exclusive interview with BAC Sports, Bekoe expressed concern over the current state of the local league, lamenting the apparent lack of dedication and quality among today’s players.
At our time, we were exhibiting quality and consistency. That’s what made the league attractive, Bekoe stated. Now the Ghana Premier League has gone down. The players are not committed, and that is affecting sponsorship and fan interest.
Bekoe, who enjoyed a successful career playing for top GPL clubs such as Asante Kotoko and Heart of Lions, also had stints with Berekum Chelsea and Liberty Professionals. His experience in the domestic league gives weight to his remarks, as he is widely regarded as one of the top performers during his playing days.
The former goal poacher believes that a renewed sense of professionalism and hunger among players can help elevate the standard of the league and draw in corporate interest, which has dwindled in recent years.
