Kwesi Nyantakyi Discharged After Five-Year Legal Battle

An Accra High Court has discharged former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi and his co-accused after a prolonged five-year trial.

The ruling, delivered by Her Ladyship Justice Marie-Louise Simmonds, followed the prosecution’s failure to present a single witness despite listing five potential individuals. The final witness declined to testify unless permitted to wear a mask, a request that further stalled the case.

With no evidence presented, the court found no grounds to continue proceedings. A key factor in the decision was a January 30, 2025, Court of Appeal ruling emphasizing the right to a fair trial within a reasonable timeframe. This ruling strengthened the High Court’s resolve to discharge the accused.

The case originated from an investigative exposé by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which shook Ghana’s football scene and led to Nyantakyi’s resignation in 2018.
