Hearts Secure First Away Win as Medeama Stumble at Bechem

Accra Hearts of Oak secured their first away victory of the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Young Apostles in a thrilling Ghana Premier League (GPL) Matchday 6 encounter in Wenchi.

The Phobians, who had a shaky start to the season, losing their first two matches, are now on a four-game unbeaten run, with two wins and two draws.

The game was evenly balanced, with both sides creating chances. Hearts appeared to have taken the lead in the 43rd minute, but Hamza Issah’s goal which was initially given was later disallowed after the referee, in consultation with the assistant referee, ruled it out for a handball.

Unfazed by the decision, Hearts returned from the break with renewed determination. They broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half, courtesy of left-back Emmanuel Amankwah, who fired home to give the visitors the lead.

Young Apostles pressed for an equalizer, and their persistence paid off in the 84th minute when striker Samuel Prempeh executed a stunning bicycle kick, looping the ball over Hearts’ goalkeeper Benjamin Asare to level the score. The home crowd erupted in celebration, but the joy was short-lived.

Just two minutes later, Hamza Issah silenced the home fans by netting his first goal of the season to restore Hearts’ lead.

The Phobians held firm in the closing stages to claim all three points, moving up to 8th place on the league table with 8 points.

Medeama Stumble at Bechem

Elsewhere in Bechem, Medeama SC suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 2-0 to Bechem United at the Nana Gyeabour Park.

The home side took control early on, with goals from Darlvin Yeboah and Emmanuel Abban in the first half, sealing an important victory for the Hunters.

This result, coupled with Bibiani Gold Stars’ 1-1 draw against Nations FC, sees Medeama and Asante Kotoko lose their positions at the top of the league standings.

Bibiani Gold Stars now sit at the summit of the GPL after Matchday 6 with 12 points, one above Medeama and Asante Kotoko.
