Asante Kotoko are poised to appoint Abdul Karim Zito, current head coach of Dreams FC, as their new manager following the departure of Prosper Narteh Ogum on April 21. Ogum’s exit comes after a series of underwhelming performances in the ongoing Ghana Premier League season.
Zito’s potential return to Kotoko is a homecoming, as he was a member of the club’s legendary 1983 CAF Champions League-winning squad and later served as a coach. He has recently impressed by leading Dreams FC to the semi-finals of the 2023/24 CAF Confederation Cup and capturing the MTN FA Cup title.
Despite winning Kotoko’s first league title in years during the 2021/22 campaign, Ogum struggled to maintain consistency in his second stint. This season, the team managed 13 wins, 8 draws, and 7 losses, with 28 goals scored and 21 conceded over 28 matches. A run of poor results, including back-to-back defeats to Accra Lions and Nations FC, led to increased pressure and his eventual dismissal.
Kotoko’s decision to turn to the experienced Zito reflects their intent to stabilize the team and pursue a strong finish in both the league and FA Cup competitions.
