Ghanaian football legend and 1978 AFCON winner, Mohammed Polo, has strongly criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for retaining Otto Addo as head coach of the Black Stars despite his failure to qualify the team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Polo, widely known as the ‘Dribbling Magician,’ expressed disbelief at the decision, arguing that Ghana’s struggles under Addo’s leadership indicate a deeper coaching issue. He questioned why the GFA would keep a coach who failed to secure qualification for the African Cup of Nations.
“The Black Stars face a serious problem, and it all boils down to coaching. Despite the disappointment in the qualifiers, Otto Addo has been maintained. It’s surprising to keep a coach who couldn’t qualify Ghana for AFCON,” Polo told Ghanasoccernet.
His concerns were further heightened by the appointment of German coach Winfried Anton Schäfer as the Technical Advisor for Ghana’s national teams. According to Polo, this move indirectly signals a lack of confidence in Addo’s capabilities.
“If you appoint a technical advisor for him, it means the coach is not good enough. We should let him go and allow the technical advisor to take full charge of the team,” he asserted.
Polo’s remarks add to growing pressure on the GFA to reconsider Addo’s position as Ghana looks to rebuild and regain its dominance on the African football stage.
