Rising Ghanaian boxer Precious Akai Nettey has confidently declared his readiness to win gold for Ghana at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, reaffirming his commitment to excellence.
The talented welterweight (67kg), who trains with the renowned Attoh Quarshie Boxing Club, clinched gold on his birthday at the 2026 National Individual Amateur Boxing Championship. The victory, he noted, serves as a strong motivation as he intensifies preparations for the international stage.
Precious Akai Nettey is determined to achieve his ambitions. He revealed that his boxing journey has been greatly influenced by former WBO Africa Champion Emmanuel Martey, popularly known as “Mayweather,” whom he regards as a mentor.
Nettey also paid tribute to his head trainer, Vincent Akai Nettey, describing him as both a “mallam” and a spiritual father whose guidance has been instrumental in shaping his career.
Coming from a supportive family, Nettey acknowledged the encouragement of his parents, Mr. Theophilus Nettey Nettey and Abigail Aryeetey, both of whom are passionate boxing enthusiasts. He noted that he values advice from experienced individuals and strives to avoid mistakes that could expose weaknesses in his performance.
An alumnus of Sacred Heart Senior High School, where he studied Accounting, Nettey believes boxing is his true calling. He admitted that he initially struggled with discipline but credited his coach for providing the professional guidance needed to harness his natural talent.
“I realised boxing is what I can do better than anything,” he said. “My height and determination continue to push me toward achieving glory and honour through sports.”
He further described the Attoh Quarshie Boxing Gym as a breeding ground for champions, highlighting its legacy of producing elite fighters such as Obodai Sai, George Ashie, and Emmanuel Martey.
Nettey has also earned a nomination in the Choice Ghana Boxing Awards, organized by Bishop Boxing Promotions, further underlining his growing reputation in the sport.
Meanwhile, his training partner, Wisdom Barnor, who represents Sierra Leone, also praised their coaches and called for improved access to modern boxing equipment. Barnor, a Greater Accra champion, has represented his country at the 2023 African Games in Accra and the World Championships in the UAE.
Barnor revealed his admiration for American boxing star Shakur Stevenson, expressing his desire to meet his idol someday. He added that the presence of Stevenson’s image at their gym serves as daily motivation to train harder.
