The Ghana Baseball and Softball Federation, together with a delegation from the Japan Africa Baseball and Softball Foundation, paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation on Monday, August 10, 2026, in a meeting aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries in the development of baseball and softball.
The delegation was led by Mr. Shinya Tomonari, President of the Japan Africa Baseball and Softball Foundation, a sports diplomat and longstanding advocate for the growth of baseball and softball across the African continent.
Addressing officials at the Ministry, Mr. Tomonari outlined the purpose of the visit, describing it as an opportunity to formally introduce the Foundation to the Ministry and to present a range of initiatives designed to benefit Ghanaian players and coaches.
Among the programmes discussed were coaching workshops, youth tournaments, and exchange programmes that would allow Ghanaian players and coaches to train alongside and learn from their Japanese counterparts, with a view to raising local technical standards in both disciplines.

Speaking further on the standing of the sport in his home country, Mr. Tomonari noted that baseball ranks among Japan’s most popular sports, with a following that surpasses even football.
He stressed, however, that the sport’s value extends well beyond competition, positioning it as a vehicle for instilling teamwork, discipline, and broader life skills in young people.
Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Sports Minister, Madam Fati Lily Soale, Chief Director at the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, welcomed the visitors and acknowledged the potential of baseball and softball as tools for youth engagement.
She noted the capacity of both disciplines to foster teamwork and discipline among young Ghanaians, echoing the sentiments expressed by Mr. Tomonari.
Madam Soale assured the delegation of the government’s support toward integrating baseball and softball more fully into Ghana’s broader sports development framework, signalling openness from the Ministry to collaborate with the Federation and its Japanese partners on the initiatives presented.
The visit marks a further step in ongoing efforts to broaden the base of baseball and softball in Ghana, with both parties signalling a shared commitment to translating Monday’s discussions into concrete programmes in the period ahead.
