The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams, has reaffirmed government’s full backing for the development of cycling in Ghana, describing the sport as one of several disciplines deserving equal attention alongside football.
The Minister made the remarks at the official launch of the sixth edition of the 3FM Tour du Ghana, held at the Best Western Premier Hotel near the Accra International Airport in Accra.
This year’s race is scheduled to take place on 28th and 29th August 2026.
Addressing dignitaries, sponsors, and members of the cycling fraternity, Hon. Adams commended Media General, 3FM, and the Ghana Cycling Federation for sustaining the initiative over the years, noting that six consecutive editions reflected consistency and a genuine belief in the potential of the sport.
He recalled that over the past year, he had engaged closely with the cycling community through platforms including the 3FM Tour du Ghana PruRide, and the Tour du Ghana itself, engagements he said had deepened his appreciation for the talent and possibilities within the sport.
Responding to a co-master of ceremonies who had spoken of his passion for football alongside an interest in other disciplines, the Minister used the moment to prove his broader mandate.
He stressed that while football remained important to government, sports extended well beyond it, encompassing cycling, athletics, swimming, boxing, basketball, and numerous other disciplines in which young people could build their future.
He said government’s responsibility was to create opportunities for athletes across all these disciplines rather than concentrating development efforts narrowly on football.
The Minister further highlighted the partnership between Media General and the Ghana Cycling Federation as a model worth emulating, noting that government could not shoulder the responsibility of sports development alone.
He called for continued collaboration between government, federations, corporate institutions, the media, and other private organisations to invest in the growth of sport in Ghana.
The 3FM Tour du Ghana has, over successive editions, grown into one of the country’s most prominent cycling events, drawing riders and enthusiasts and helping to raise the profile of competitive cycling nationwide.
