Chelsea Add Spanish Flair as Pep Chavarria Arrives From Rayo Vallecano
Chelsea have bolstered their defensive options with the signing of Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, handing the Spanish left-back a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2031.
The Premier League side confirmed the transfer after completing negotiations with Rayo, reportedly agreeing a fee of £16 million plus a possible £2 million in add-ons for the 28-year-old.
“Chelsea are delighted to announce the signing of Pep Chavarria from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano,” the club said in a statement announcing his arrival.
Chavarria becomes Chelsea’s ninth signing of the summer as the club continues to reshape its squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. He will now join his new team-mates at Cobham as preparations intensify.
The move represents the latest stage in a career that began in Spain’s lower divisions before Chavarria established himself in La Liga. He started at hometown club UE Figueres before moving to UE Olot, where his performances earned him a move to Real Zaragoza in 2020.
After two seasons with Zaragoza, he stepped into the top flight with Rayo Vallecano in 2022 and spent four seasons developing into a reliable presence on the left flank.
Chavarria played 44 times last season as Rayo reached the UEFA Conference League final, while also helping the club secure consecutive eighth-place finishes in La Liga.
Chavarria Brings Intensity to Stamford Bridge
His versatility and energy appear central to what Chelsea have seen in him. The defender described himself as a player who enjoys contributing at both ends of the pitch.
“As a player, I love to attack, defend, box-to-box, and I have a lot of intensity,” I have a lot of energy on the pitch. They are my biggest abilities.”
He also welcomed the chance to test himself in England, having spent his entire career in Spanish football.
“I have played in Spain all my life, and for me the Premier League is the best league in the world right now,” he said.
“With a lot of quality and intensity, I think that it’s the best league for me.”
Chavarria is expected to provide competition and depth at left-back to Jarrel Hato following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid.
The new arrival said the opportunity to join Chelsea represents a major personal milestone and pledged to work hard to justify the club’s faith in him.
“I’m so excited to get started,” Chavarria said. “This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
“It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success.”
His arrival adds another experienced player to an increasingly reshaped Chelsea squad, with the club hoping Chavarria’s attacking instincts, defensive work rate and familiarity with high-level Spanish football will translate successfully to the Premier League.
