Member of Parliament’s Youth and Sports Committee, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has commended the University for Development Studies (UDS) for its outstanding performances on the global football stage, describing the Tamale-based institution’s recent triumphs as a source of national pride.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, Mr Addo said he had followed UDS’s football fortunes closely since 2024 and paid tribute to the team’s historic achievement in Cairo, Egypt, where the side retained its title at the 12th All-Africa University Games earlier this week, defeating Guinea’s Julius Nyerere University 2–1 in the final.
The result made UDS the first university in the history of African university football to win the championship in back-to-back editions, following their maiden triumph at the previous edition in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2024.

Mr Addo also referenced UDS’s earlier success on the world stage, noting that the university claimed the FISU World University Football Championship in September 2025, becoming the first African team to win the global title. UDS defeated Brazil’s Paulista University 2–1 after extra time in the final, staged in Dalian, China, with the winning goal arriving in the 121st minute.
Building on the achievement, Mr Addo urged sporting authorities and national team scouts to take a closer look at the UDS squad, suggesting that some of the players who powered the university’s continental and world triumphs could be considered for national assignments.

The MP’s remarks add to growing public recognition of UDS’s rise as a dominant force in university football, both on the continent and globally, with the institution’s back-to-back African crown and reigning world title cementing its status as a benchmark for collegiate football excellence in Africa.
