History was made at the Borteyman Aquatic Center, as Ghana’s swimming sensation and team captain, Abeku Jackson, clinched a bronze medal in the men’s 100m butterfly event, with a remarkable finish time of 58.80 seconds.
Ahead of him were South Africa’s Jarden Eaton, who claimed the silver with a swift 53.45 seconds, and Egypt’s Abdulia Nasr, who took home the gold, with a blistering 53.29 seconds.
The 23-year-old brings Ghana’s total to five medals, marking his second medal after securing bronze in the men’s 100m butterfly, having previously secured a silver medal in the men’s 50m butterfly event.
His achievement has not only doubled his medal count at the Games but has also etched his name into the archives of history as the first Ghanaian to stand on the podium in swimming at the African Games.
After the race, an elated Jackson expressed his immense pride in representing his country and contributing to its sporting achievements.
“I’m excited for Team Ghana and all the athletes in swimming. My first African Games, I managed to be in the finals. I was in top four, top five in individual events and now it’s a stepping stone, I’m on the medal podium. It’s exciting to be here and get the fans shout for you.” He said.
As the Games continue, all eyes remain on Jackson and the Ghanaian team to see what other accolades they will bring home.
