Egyptian giants Al Ahly cemented their status as kings of African club football after claiming a narrow 1-0 victory over Esperance de Tunis in the second leg of the CAF Champions League final on Saturday night in Cairo.
The historic win, achieved at a packed Cairo International Stadium, sees Al Ahly extend their record title haul to a remarkable 12.
The two-legged final affair was a tense battle between two of Africa’s most decorated clubs.
The first leg, played in Rades, Tunisia, ended in a goalless draw, leaving the tie wide open. However, the drama unfolded in the electric atmosphere of Cairo on Saturday.
The all-important goal came in fortuitous circumstances for Al Ahly. Under pressure from the home side, Esperance defender, Roger Aholou, turned the ball into his own net, sending the passionate Cairo crowd into a frenzy.
Despite valiant efforts from Esperance to equalize, Al Ahly held firm to secure a hard-fought victory.
This triumph marks a significant milestone for Al Ahly, solidifying their position as the most successful club in CAF Champions League history.
Manager Marcel Koller expressed his delight at guiding the Egyptians to this wonderful feat, “this is a special moment for the club, the fans, and everyone associated with Al Ahly. Winning a record 12th Champions League title is a remarkable achievement, and I’m incredibly proud of the players’ efforts.”
Esperance, despite falling short in the final, can hold their heads high after a strong run in the competition.
The experience gained by the Tunisian side will undoubtedly fuel their desire to challenge for continental glory again next season.
