The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) is set to hold its long-awaited Congress and Elections on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. This was confirmed by the Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) during a press conference held today (Tuesday) at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The newly elected executives will officially take over the leadership of the dissolved body two days later, with a handover ceremony planned for Thursday, June 4, 2026.

Speaking at the press conference, Chairman of the IMC, Mr. Samir Captan, outlined the steps leading to the election.

He explained that the committee is following a key directive from the National Sports Authority (NSA). Before the elections can proceed, the NSA has instructed the body to complete the proper registration process. This involves a final decision on whether the organization will be registered as an “Association” or an “Authority,” in line with the regulations of LI 2477-2023.

Mr. Captan also provided an update on the health and safety aspects of the sport, noting that plans for an independent Medical Commission (MEDAC) are being completed.

Achievements and Roadmap to Elections

Reflecting on the committee’s work since its formation, Mr. Captan listed several achievements. He stated that they have strictly vetted and approved international bouts, which helped to restore professional boxing activities following a suspension. The committee has also worked on new medical and anti-doping rules.

The IMC has overseen a number of successful boxing events during this period, including the Tarkwa Boxing Explosion, Legacy Rise Showdown, and the Best of Bukom II.

The IMC has divided the path to the election into different phases. The current “Reform Phase,” running from February to April, will focus on several key areas. These include the incorporation process, a rollout of licensing and insurance for boxers, finalizing medical protocols, launching a new portal, amending the constitution, and registering stakeholders. The committee also plans to organize regional clinics, training, and workshops during this time.

The Interim Management Committee was set up on September 29, 2025, by the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, and the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Adams. The decision was made to improve safety, governance, and professional standards after boxing activities were suspended in 2025.

The suspension followed the tragic deaths of two boxers: Nigeria’s Gabriel Oluwsegun and Ghana’s Ernest Akushey, also known as ‘Bahubali’.
