EXCLUSIVE: Baba Rahman Set for Black Stars Return Ahead of March Friendlies
Abdul Baba Rahman is on the verge of making a return to the Ghana national team squad ahead of the upcoming international friendlies against Austria and Germany later this month, The BAC Sports can exclusively confirm.
The PAOK Thessaloniki left-back is expected to be included in Ghana’s squad list for the two friendly matches, which is anticipated to be released later this week. His inclusion would mark his first call-up to the national team in almost three years.
Rahman, 31, last featured for the Black Stars in September 2023 during Ghana’s final qualifier for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations against the Central African Republic in Kumasi.
Following that match, the former Chelsea defender declined subsequent call-ups, explaining that he needed time away from the national team due to what he described as excessive criticism from sections of the fan base. At the time, he indicated he would only return when he felt psychologically ready.
However, close sources have revealed to The BAC Sports that Rahman has now rescinded his earlier decision and is prepared to represent Ghana again, having regained the mental strength to rejoin the national setup.
The experienced defender has been one of Ghana’s most consistent left-backs in recent seasons and continues to perform strongly for PAOK in Greece. So far this term, he has been involved in 3 goals for PAOK, scoring twice and providing 1 assist.
His return is expected to strengthen the Black Stars’ defensive options as the team intensifies preparations for upcoming international friendlies and the World Cup later in the year.
The friendly matches against Austria and Germany will form part of Ghana’s build-up toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. The Black Stars have been drawn in Group L, where they are set to face Panama, England, and Croatia.
Rahman’s potential return is expected to add experience and stability to the squad as Ghana aims to build momentum ahead of the global showpiece.
The official squad list for the March friendlies is expected to be announced on either Thursday or Friday.
