Accra is officially hosting the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships today, Tuesday, 12 May, as Africa’s top athletes arrive to compete in one of the continent’s biggest track and field events.

Ghana will witness the best sprinters, jumpers, throwers, and distance runners battle for glory in a championship expected to deliver exciting performances all week.

Morning Session

Competition starts at 9:00 AM with the Men’s 100m Decathlon, followed by the Men’s Long Jump Decathlon at 9:50 AM and the Men’s Shot Put Decathlon at 11:00 AM.

These early events begin the challenging two-day decathlon competition.

Afternoon Session

The afternoon begins at 3:00 PM with the Men’s 400m Hurdles Heats.

At 3:30 PM, attention shifts to the Women’s 100m Heats, one of the most exciting sprint events of the day.

Other major events include the Men’s Long Jump Qualification, Men’s 100m Heats, and the Men’s High Jump Decathlon.

The Women’s and Men’s 400m Heats follow at 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM.

At 5:05 PM, the Men’s Shot Put Final will produce the first gold medal winner of the championships.

Evening Session

The evening features key finals and semifinals.

The Women’s 5000m Final starts at 5:50 PM, followed by the Women’s Discus Final at 6:05 PM.

The Men’s 800m Heats begin at 6:15 PM, while the Women’s 100m Semifinal takes place at 6:30 PM.

One of the biggest highlights comes at 6:55 PM with the Men’s 100m Semifinal.

The day ends with the Men’s 400m Decathlon at 7:10 PM and the Mixed 4x400m Relay Heats at 7:20 PM, closing an exciting opening day in Accra.
