Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, addressed the media and the public in a press briefing to provide detailed updates on key developments in Ghana’s sports sector. His remarks covered governance interventions in the Ghana Swimming Association, the successful hosting of the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships, and ongoing preparations for Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

On the Ghana Swimming Association and International Communications

Hon. Adams reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to integrity, transparency, and the sustainable development of swimming in Ghana. He noted that stakeholder concerns regarding governance, electoral conduct, and accountability within the Ghana Swimming Association necessitated the Ministry’s intervention. Through structured dialogue involving the Ghana Olympic Committee, the Electoral Commission, and athlete representatives, the Ministry facilitated a framework to oversee fair elections and promote institutional stability. Regarding recognition issues raised by World Aquatics, the Ministry reiterated its dedication to stakeholder engagement, transparency, and athlete welfare, and pledged continued collaboration to achieve a credible resolution that restores confidence in the sport.

On the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships

The Minister highlighted Ghana’s successful bid to host the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships in May 2026 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Legon, following a competitive bidding process that defeated Botswana. A Local Organising Committee (LOC) was established to manage competition logistics, security, medical services, and media operations. The event welcomed delegations from 49 African countries, comprising over 900 athletes, officials, media personnel, and volunteers. Despite operational challenges including accreditation delays and catering concerns, the Ministry ensured that adequate support systems were activated, demonstrating Ghana’s capacity to host major international sporting events and stimulate local tourism and economic activity.

On Preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

The Ministry provided an update on Ghana’s strategic roadmap towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A nationwide fundraising campaign, launched by President John Dramani Mahama, aims to raise US$30m to support team logistics, player preparation, and operational expenses, and has already garnered strong support from corporate Ghana and private stakeholders.

The Ghana Football Association has appointed renowned coach Carlos Queiroz as head coach, focusing on tactical training, physical conditioning, and team assessment. The Black Stars’ pre-tournament training camp has been confirmed at Bryant University in Rhode Island, USA, with international friendly matches scheduled in Austria, Germany, Mexico, and Wales. The Ministry has also initiated engagements with the U.S. and Canadian Embassies to streamline visa and travel arrangements for supporters, accreditation, and operational cooperation.

On Ongoing Diplomatic and Logistical Engagements

Further consultations are underway with the Canadian High Commission and other diplomatic missions to ensure seamless operations during the tournament. In addition, fan engagement activities and fan parks are being organized across several Ghanaian cities to foster national enthusiasm and support.

The Minister reaffirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to transparency, stakeholder collaboration, and athlete welfare. Despite the challenges inherent in organizing large-scale sporting events, Ghana remains resolute in its pursuit of credible, well-coordinated participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the continued advancement of its sports sector. The Ministry assured the public of regular updates as preparations progress and expressed appreciation for the sustained support of the media and the Ghanaian people.
