Manuel Cerundolo Produces Stunning Comeback to Eliminate Sinner from French Open
Argentina’s Juan Manuel Cerundolo pulled off a sensational comeback to knock world number one Jannik Sinner out of the French Open after recovering from two sets down in Paris.
Sinner looked on course for a comfortable victory after taking the first two sets and moving 5-1 ahead in the third.
However, the Italian’s physical condition appeared to worsen as the match progressed, allowing Cerundolo to seize control.
The Argentine fought back to win 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-0 in what could go down as one of the biggest shocks of the tournament.
Former British number one Annabel Croft noted Sinner’s struggles during commentary, saying that “Sinner looks like he is about to throw up in the middle of the court, he is not in good shape.”
Cerundolo remained composed despite the occasion and continued forcing errors from the tiring top seed.
Croft later praised the Argentine’s focus, describing the performance as “one of the all-time greatest upsets.”
The victory marks the biggest Grand Slam result of Cerundolo’s career and sends him into the third round at Roland Garros for the first time while Sinner exits the tournament after a dramatic collapse.
