Ghana’s Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to Croatia in their final Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Philadelphia but still booked a place in the Round of 32 as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
The defeat was Ghana’s first of the competition, ending their unbeaten start to the tournament. However, four points from three matches proved enough to secure progression to the knockout stage, marking the country’s third appearance beyond the World Cup group phase.
Croatia, meanwhile, claimed their second victory of the tournament to finish second in Group L, setting up a Round of 32 clash with the runners-up from Group K.
The opening exchanges of the game were evenly contested, with neither side willing to take unnecessary risks. While Ghana enjoyed spells of possession, Croatia looked more dangerous in the attacking third whenever opportunities arose.
The Europeans nearly opened the scoring when Petar Sučić struck the outside of the post after creating space on the edge of the penalty area. Ghana survived that scare but struggled to deal with Croatia’s growing confidence.
Croatia Punish Ghana Before the Break
Croatia eventually found the breakthrough in the 31st minute through Sučić. The Inter Milan midfielder unleashed a fierce low strike from distance that squeezed through the legs of Derrick Luckassen before beating goalkeeper Benjamin Asare to put his side in front.
Ghana responded by pushing more bodies forward in search of an equaliser before halftime. Antoine Semenyo came closest for the Black Stars, but his low effort flashed narrowly wide of Dominik Livaković’s far post.
Recognising the need for greater attacking urgency, Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz made two substitutions immediately after the restart, introducing Abdul Fatawu Issahaku and Oppong Peprah in place of Elisha Owusu and Jonas Adjetey.
The changes had an immediate impact as Issahaku’s direct running stretched the Croatian defence and gave the Black Stars greater attacking momentum during the second half.
Luckassen Levels the Scores
After sustained pressure, Ghana finally found their equaliser from a set piece. Ernest Nuamah delivered an inviting free kick into the penalty area, where Derrick Luckassen rose highest to head home his first international goal and his maiden strike at the FIFA World Cup.
The goal briefly transformed the live Group L standings, lifting Ghana into second place and putting them on course for automatic qualification to the knockout rounds.
Croatia, however, responded strongly and restored their lead with just seven minutes remaining. Luka Modrić’s corner found Nicola Vlašić, whose header bounced in off the post to hand Croatia a decisive 2-1 advantage.
Ghana Through Despite Defeat
After the match, Carlos Queiroz described the result as unfortunate, insisting both goals his team conceded could have been prevented. He nevertheless praised his players for showing character and securing qualification despite the defeat.
In the group’s other fixture, England defeated Panama 2-0 through goals from Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane to finish as Group L winners.
Croatia ended second, while Ghana advanced in third as one of the best third-placed teams.
The Black Stars will now face the winners of Group K, while Croatia will take on the group’s runners-up, with Colombia and Portugal still battling to determine the final knockout pairings.
