Okraku Sympathizes With Accra Flood Victims as Black Stars Chase World Cup Dream
Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku has extended his sympathies to victims of the recent floods that devastated parts of Accra, urging affected families to remain hopeful during what he described as a difficult period for the nation.
The flooding, caused by heavy rainfall, resulted in loss of lives, displacement of residents and widespread destruction of property across several communities in the capital.
In a statement, Simeon-Okraku noted that while Ghanaians are celebrating the Black Stars’ qualification for the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, many citizens are facing the painful consequences of the disaster.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult period,” he said, adding that the football fraternity stands in solidarity with everyone affected.
The GFA President also praised the efforts of the government, emergency responders, volunteers and relief agencies assisting flood victims.
He prayed for “strength for every family, comfort for those who have suffered losses, and the swift restoration of homes, livelihoods and communities,” expressing hope that unity and resilience would help the country recover.
Simeon-Okraku has led the GFA since 2019 after succeeding Kwasi Nyantakyi, whose administration ended following the “Number 12” corruption investigation by Anas Aremeyaw Anas.
The GFA President, who also serves as the second vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is expected to complete his current term in 2027.
However, following the extension of the GFA presidential term from two to three, he will be eligible to contest for a third term.
