Kumasi Asante Kotoko head coach, Prosper Nerteh Ogum, has disclosed that his team did not specifically assign a player to mark Berekum Chelsea’s danger man, Stephen Amankona, during their Ghana Premier League clash at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Instead, Kotoko’s strategy focused on blocking the passing channels that could bring the best out of the talented forward.
Despite Amankona’s reputation as one of Chelsea’s most dangerous attacking threats, Ogum emphasized that his team’s defensive organization was key to limiting his influence.
We didn’t assign any player to man-mark Stephen Amankona, but we ensured that we blocked the spaces that allow him to thrive, Ogum said in his post-match comments.
This tactical approach proved effective as Kotoko secured a narrow 1-0 victory, courtesy of a 79th-minute goal from Daniel Adjei. The win propelled the Porcupine Warriors to the top of the Ghana Premier League table with 45 points from 24 matches, surpassing Bibiani Gold Stars by a single point.
Kotoko’s defensive discipline and well-structured play prevented Berekum Chelsea from creating clear-cut chances, reinforcing the impact of Ogum’s strategic decision-making.
With this victory, Kotoko have strengthened their title ambitions, while Berekum Chelsea, currently in ninth place on the table.
