The Angolan Football Federation (FAF) has announced a major change in its national team policy. This decision comes after the team’s performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations did not meet expectations.
The new plan aims to build a stronger, more sustainable future for Angolan football. It focuses on three main areas.
First, there will be a new limit on selecting players from the diaspora. Going forward, the national team will call up a maximum of 25 overseas-based players for any selection pool. This marks a shift from recent years, where the squad heavily relied on talent born or raised outside Angola.
Second, the federation will place a much stronger focus on home-based talent. There will be a greater reliance on players who compete in the domestic Girabola league and lower divisions for national competitions. This move is designed to strengthen the local league and reward performance within Angola.
The long-term plan is centered on youth development and sustainability. The FAF will invest more in coaching, training facilities, and youth academies across the country. The goal is to build a solid foundation of players developed in Angola from a young age.
This new approach signals a return to local roots for the Palancas Negras.
After 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) exit both players and members of the technical crew were questioned over the disappointing campaign.
The entire Angolan squad were ordered to return to Luanda as a group following their elimination from the tournament.
They appeared before the FA to explain their failure to advance to the round of 16.
