Ati-Zigi Deserves Fresh Chance as Black Stars Prepare for Crucial Friendlies -Nana Kwaku Agyemang

Senior sports analyst Nana Kwaku Agyemang has called for Lawrence Ati-Zigi to be handed a starting role in Ghana’s upcoming international friendlies against Austria and Germany, insisting the opportunity is necessary to reassess the goalkeeping situation.

Speaking on Bullet TV’s Sports Cafe, Agyemang clarified that his stance is not about consistency but rather about giving the former first-choice goalkeeper a fair chance to show what he can still offer after losing his place to Hearts of Oak’s Benjamin Asare.

“I want Lawrence Ati-Zigi to start in these friendlies [Germany and Austria] because I know what Hearts of Oak’s goalkeeper Benjamin Asare brings on board,” he stated.

Asare has been Ghana’s number one since earning his first call-up about a year ago, successfully usurping Ati-Zigi to claim the starting role. However, Agyemang believes that after an extended run of games for Asare, the technical team must now re-evaluate their options.

According to him, the friendlies present the perfect platform to give Ati-Zigi minutes and assess what he can still offer the team moving forward, especially with major assignments on the horizon.

Ghana will face Austria in Vienna on March 27 before taking on Germany in Stuttgart three days later as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Black Stars will be making their fifth World Cup appearance and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England, and Croatia.

With competition for the number one spot heating up, the upcoming matches could play a decisive role in shaping Ghana’s goalkeeping hierarchy ahead of the tournament.
