Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has stated that he would not be surprised to see veteran forward Andre Ayew included in the Black Stars squad for the next FIFA World Cup. The Minister believes that the experienced player, who is still active at club level, has more to offer the national team.

In an interview, Mr. Adams acknowledged that team selection is ultimately the responsibility of the head coach. However, he noted that Ayew’s recent performances for his Dutch club keep him in the conversation for a potential return to the international stage.

“I think he is picking up also. Once he has not retired and still playing actively, I won’t be surprised to see him in the Black Stars squad for the World Cup,” Adams told Adom FM.

He was careful to stress that the final decision rests with the technical handlers of the team. “However, it is the responsibility of the coach to decide whether to invite him or not,” he added.

Andre Ayew is Ghana’s most capped player of all time and a former captain of the side. Over the past decade, he has been a key figure for the Black Stars, featuring in multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and representing the country at the FIFA World Cup.

His leadership on the pitch and deep understanding of the game have often been described as valuable assets, especially for a squad undergoing changes.

At 36 years old, Ayew now faces strong competition from a new generation of talented Ghanaian players. This has led to discussions among fans and experts about whether he still has a place in the team’s future plans.

However, his recent form at club level has sparked fresh debate about a possible return to the national team.

After joining NAC Breda during the winter transfer window, the forward has made eight appearances in the Dutch Eredivisie and has delivered some impressive performances.

His move to the Netherlands came after he had been without a club since leaving French side Le Havre in May 2025. He signed with NAC Breda on a deal that runs until the end of the season, with an option for another year.

Ayew has not played for the Black Stars in over a year. As Ghana pushes to secure its place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and build a strong squad for the tournament, the question of whether Ayew will be included is likely to remain a topic of discussion in the coming months.
