Black Satellites Secure First Win in U-20 WAFU B Cup with Victory Over Niger
Ghana’s Black Satellites recorded their first win in the U-20 WAFU B African Cup of Nations qualifying tournament with a 2-0 victory over Niger on Sunday, October 20.
The triumph, powered by a second-half brace from forward Aziz Musibau, saw Desmond Ofei’s team collect all three points in their second Group A fixture.
Coming into the match, both sides were searching for their first victory of the tournament. Ghana had previously drawn 2-2 with Benin in their opening game, while Niger also shared the spoils in a 2-2 draw against Togo.
With both teams eager to break into the win column, the early exchanges of the match were highly competitive.
The first half saw a flurry of chances for both teams, but despite the promising build-up play, neither side was able to convert their opportunities into goals. As a result, the teams went into halftime still deadlocked at 0-0, with everything to play for in the second period.
Ghana finally found the breakthrough in the 63rd minute when Aziz Musibau unleashed a powerful long-range shot that flew past the Nigerien goalkeeper, giving the Black Satellites a 1-0 advantage. Musibau’s strike was a moment of brilliance that swung the momentum in Ghana’s favor.
Just 10 minutes later, Musibau struck again, capping off a well-executed counterattack. Jerry Afriyie set up the goal, playing a perfectly timed pass into Musibau’s path, allowing the forward to slot home his second goal of the match and double Ghana’s lead.
Despite Niger’s efforts to get back into the game, the Black Satellites maintained their defensive discipline, keeping a clean sheet and securing a much-needed win. The result lifts Ghana to four points from two games, setting them up well for their final group match against Togo on Wednesday, October 23.
This tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, and Ghana will be keen to build on this momentum as they continue their pursuit of a place in the continental competition.
