Bruno Fernandes has etched his name further into Manchester United record, breaking David Beckham’s 26-year-old record for the most assists by a United player in a single Premier League season.
The Portuguese playmaker provided two assists during United’s crucial victory over Aston Villa, taking his tally to 16 for the campaign and surpassing the iconic haul of 15 achieved by Beckham during the 1999/2000 treble-winning season.

“It was a very important win,” Fernandes reflected after the match. “We needed to win as we didn’t get the three points last game. I still think we can do much better.”
The United captain’s first assist arrived when he teed up Casemiro for the second-half opener, before turning provider again for Matheus Cunha to seal the victory. The assist marks Fernandes’ 100th goal involvement in all competitions for Manchester United in the Premier League era.
He becomes only the fourth player to reach a century of assists for the club since the Premier League’s inception, joining an exclusive group comprising Ryan Giggs (249), Wayne Rooney (127), and David Beckham (115).

A Record Built on Service to Team-mates
Despite the personal achievements Fernandes was keen to emphasise the collective nature of his achievement.
“Assists record broken? I’m more proud and pleased because I did it serving my team-mates,” he said. “Giving joy to the others is very important in the position I play. Giving joy to the others is also very good.”
The victory against Aston Villa carried additional weight in the context of United’s season, with Fernandes acknowledging the importance of gaining an advantage over a direct competitor.
“It was very important because it was against a direct opponent, we had the same points, to gain this advantage from them is always good. We knew we needed to win the game after the last game. Today we did the job.”
While celebrating his individual achievement, Fernandes maintains focus on the bigger picture: “It’s a huge achievement for me but the main achievement would be in the top spot at the end of the season.”
Statistical Dominance
Fernandes’ performance against Aston Villa exemplified his influence on proceedings:
90 minutes played
45/52 passes completed (87%)
2 big chances created
6 chances created
100% dribble success rate
6 recoveries
2 assists
The 29-year-old has now registered 23 goals and assists in United colours during the Premier League season, underlining his status as the team’s creative fulcrum.
Carrick Influence Evident
Fernandes’ remarkable attacking output has intensified since Michael Carrick assumed interim charge following Ruben Amorim’s departure. Under Carrick’s stewardship, Fernandes has contributed two goals and eight assists in just eight league fixtures, meaning more than half of his season’s assist tally has arrived during this period.

Beyond the assist record, Fernandes continues to climb statistical leaderboards that place him among United’s all-time greats. The match against Aston Villa marked the 18th occasion since his February 2020 debut that he has registered both a goal and an assist in a Premier League fixture.
Only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (27) has achieved the feat more frequently during that period. Within United’s own history, only Wayne Rooney (35) and Ryan Giggs (22) have produced goal-and-assist performances in a single Premier League match on more occasions than Fernandes.
