The Cape Coast Open Championship 2026 saw a standout performance in the men’s 400m hurdles, as Ghana’s Seidu Mammoudu Baba delivered a commanding performance to finish first.

Representing the Ghana Armed Forces, Mammoudu crossed the finish line in a time of 49.45 seconds. This achievement marks a new Personal Best and Season’s Best for the athlete, and is the first time he has broken the 50-second barrier in his career. His smooth technique and strong running down the final straight made his time the fastest of the competition.

Osborn Turkson from Cheetahs Track and Field Club finished second in the same heat with a time of 50.41 seconds. He was followed by Banabas Dompey, also of the Ghana Armed Forces, who took third place in 50.70 seconds.

The other finishers in Heat 2 were Peter Antiedu (Sagnation Track & Field) in 53.97, Alhassan Suleman (Ghana National Fire Service) in 56.54, and Paul Debrah Owusu (KNUST) in 57.84.

In the first heat of the men’s 400m hurdles, Clinton Owusu of Cheetahs Track and Field Club was the winner. He finished in 53.15 seconds, ahead of Evans Ofosu (UEW) in 55.82 and Emmanuel Brefo (UEW) in 59.06. Kofi Elkana (Ghana Immigration Service) and Anthony Mensah (Central Region) completed the race in 1:01.12 and 1:01.46, respectively.

Mammoudu’s winning time of 49.45 is one of the quickest early-season 400m hurdles times recorded in Ghana in recent years. His strong form sets a high standard for the rest of the domestic season as he and his competitors now look ahead to the national championships.

Bossman Appiah Kusi Shines in U20 400m Hurdles

The future of Ghana’s hurdling looks bright after an impressive display in the U20 Boys’ 400m Hurdles at the Cape Coast Open.

Bossman Appiah Kusi, a student from Prempeh College, was the star of the event. He ran a controlled and powerful race, finishing with a time of 52.34 seconds. This was the fastest time recorded in the U-20 category and highlighted the strong talent coming through the country’s school athletics system.
