Ghana U20 head coach Desmond Ofei has confirmed that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) is making efforts to bring striker Jerry Afriyie back into the Black Satellites squad for the remainder of the 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Afriyie, 18, left the national team camp after two group matches to return to his club side, CD Lugo, in Spain. The decision was based on a pre-tournament agreement between the GFA and Lugo, allowing the young forward to assist his club in their ongoing relegation battle in the Primera Federación.

Speaking to the media, Coach Ofei revealed that discussions are underway to recall the striker, whose impact in the tournament was already significant. Afriyie notably provided the crucial assist for Emmanuel Mensah’s winner in Ghana’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over defending champions Senegal.

We’ll try to bring Jerry back,” Coach Desmond Ofei stated. “His contribution was clear in our last game, and we know how important he can be for us in the knockout stage. The GFA is in talks with his club, and we’re hopeful something positive comes out of it.

Ghana has already secured qualification to the quarterfinals with a match to spare and will wrap up their Group C campaign against the Central African Republic. The possible return of Afriyie would come as a major boost for the Black Satellites as they aim to challenge for the continental title.
