The Teranga Lions of Senegal is facing a monumental sporting and financial crisis following their dramatic walk off from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final. The entire playing and coaching staff could be suspended for the majority of the upcoming FIFA World Cup due to their actions.

The incident occurred during the AFCON final, when the Senegalese team left the pitch before the official conclusion of the match. This act has been classified by governing bodies as a case of “gross indiscipline.”

According to football regulations, such an offense carries an automatic suspension of four to six matches. These bans must be served in the team’s next official continental or global tournament, which in this case is the World Cup.

If the suspensions are applied as stated, the consequences would be severe. The eleven players who were on the pitch at the time, along with members of the coaching staff, would miss all of Senegal’s World Cup group stage matches. Furthermore, they would also be ineligible for a potential Round of 16 match, effectively ruling them out for the core of the tournament.

In addition to the playing bans, the Senegalese Football Federation is expected to receive significant financial penalties.

Football authorities are currently reviewing the final match report. An official decision is expected in the coming weeks. The potential suspensions cast a large shadow over Senegal’s World Cup preparations, threatening to derail the campaign of one of Africa’s strongest football nations before it even begins.
