FECOFOOT President Sentenced to Life Imprisonment Over Misuse of Funds
The president of the Congolese Football Federation (FECOFOOT), Jean-Guy Blaise Mayolas, has reportedly been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of multiple financial crimes linked to the management of football funds in the country.
According to reports from Republic of the Congo, Mayolas was convicted on several charges including money laundering, forgery, illegal conflict of interest, and the embezzlement of funds provided by FIFA during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The funds in question were part of FIFA’s financial assistance programme introduced to support football associations around the world during the pandemic. The money was specifically earmarked for the development of women’s football and the construction of a national training centre.
However, investigators found that the funds were allegedly misappropriated and diverted away from their intended projects, prompting legal action against the long-serving football administrator.
The verdict marks one of the most severe punishments handed to a football official on the African continent in recent years, highlighting growing scrutiny over the management of football development funds.
Authorities say the ruling sends a strong signal about accountability and transparency in sports administration, particularly when it involves resources meant for grassroots and women’s football development.
