Following a dramatic end to the AFCON 2025, Senegal’s national team coach, Pape Thiaw, has shared a powerful and emotional statement on social media. His words paint a picture of deep love for his country, a challenging situation on the field, and gratitude for those who supported the team.

Thiaw began by firmly rooting himself in his homeland. “For Senegal,” he wrote. “My heart, my soul, and my spirit are anchored in this beautiful country that has given me everything, and for it, I would do the impossible.”

He reflected on what he called an “exceptional tournament” with excellent organization, but one that concluded in a difficult manner. The coach addressed the controversial moment that saw him lead his team off the field briefly. He explained that his actions were not meant to disrespect the sport but were driven by a desire to protect his players.

“It was never my intention to go against the principles of the game I love so much,” Thiaw stated. “I simply tried to protect my players in the face of injustice.” He described his reaction as an emotional response to what he felt was a lack of fairness, asking for understanding from football fans who know that passion is a core part of the game.

After a team discussion, he and the players decided to return to the pitch to try and win the trophy for their country. “I apologise if I have offended anyone,” he added, emphasizing that the team’s focus was on competing for Senegal.

The coach extended his thanks to the country’s leadership, including the President and the Minister of Sports, for creating ideal conditions for the team. He also thanked the Senegalese Football Federation and the team’s loyal fans for their massive support.

On a personal note, Thiaw credited his family as his foundation. “I could not have done all of this without my family,” he said, mentioning his late mother, his father, his wife, and his children as his key sources of strength.

He saved his final praise for his players. “Finally, to my guys, these 28 warriors who gave sweat, blood, and soul for their nation,” Thiaw wrote. “It is a joy to lead you because, beyond being legends, you are exceptional human beings.”
