The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is set to introduce Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in Ghana football, begining it’s implementation in the Ghana Premier League in a bid to enhance the standard of officiating.
This was announced by GFA President, Kurt Okraku, during the association’s Meet The Press event in Sunyani.
The decision comes in response to widespread criticism of the officiating in the league, with many stakeholders calling for improved decision-making. The introduction of VAR is seen as a significant step forward in addressing these concerns.
“We are aware of the challenges facing refereeing in our league,” Okraku said. “The introduction of VAR is a clear indication of our commitment to improving the standard of the game.”
While the exact timeline for the implementation of VAR has not been specified, the GFA president’s statement signals a positive step towards embracing technology to enhance the fairness and credibility of the Ghana Premier League.
The move is in line with the global trend of utilizing VAR in top-tier football competitions to minimize controversial decisions and ensure fair play.
