Ghana’s standing in African volleyball has received a major boost following a successful performance at the 2026 CAVB Zone III Volleyball Club Championship.

The tournament was held at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra from March 1st to 10th, drawing 32 top clubs from seven countries across Africa.

In a dominant display, the Ghana Army Volleyball Club swept aside Nigeria Customs Volleyball Club in straight sets to secure the men’s title.

The women’s division final was equally impressive, with Kalibi Volleyball Club delivering a powerful 3-0 victory over Nigeria’s Vipers Volleyball Club to claim the championship.

The final was attended by high-profile figures, including Bouchra Hajij, the President of the Confederation of African Volleyball, whose presence highlighted the tournament’s importance for the continent.

They were joined by local sports leaders such as Richard Akpokavie, President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, and Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority, showing strong national backing for the sport.

At the closing ceremony, Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, praised the teams for their achievements. “We are impressed with the exploits of Ghana volleyball,” he said. He pointed to the government’s commitment to sports, noting that support from the President’s Sports Fund is intended to help all sports grow in a lasting way.

However, Hon. Adams also made a clear call to the business community. He stressed that for Ghana to keep its competitive edge and reach new heights in Africa and the world, stronger corporate support is needed. He explained that investment in clubs and grassroots programs is vital for future success.

With new and improved sports facilities, a growing number of talented players, and the success of international tournaments like this one, Ghana is quickly becoming a team to watch in West Africa. Many believe that with more help from corporate sponsors, the country’s volleyball teams have the potential to achieve great things on the global stage, pointing to a bright future for the sport in Ghana.
