Ghana Premier League: Kotoko seek first win against Heart of Lions

Twenty-five-time Ghana Premier League champions, Asante Kotoko travel to Kpando on Saturday to face Heart of Lions in a matchday 21 encounter at the Kpando Sports Stadium.

Despite their pedigree, the Porcupine Warriors have struggled against the Kpando-based side in recent years. Kotoko have not beaten Lions since 2015, the year the hosts were relegated. Since Lions’ return to the top flight in 2023, Kotoko have failed to record a win in five meetings, drawing three and losing twice.

Heart of Lions have recorded mixed results at home in recent weeks. In their last five matches at Kpando, they have won two, drawn two and lost one.

Overall, however, their form has dipped, with three defeats, one draw and one win in their last five Premier League outings.

Kotoko’s most recent visit to Kpando ended in a draw, but their away form remains a concern. In their last five matches on the road, the Kumasi-based side have lost three, drawn one and won one.

Currently third on the league table, Kotoko will be desperate for maximum points, especially after Medeama SC’s defeat to Nations FC on Friday. A win in Kpando would reduce the gap to the summit to five points.

Heart of Lions, on the other hand, will be aiming to move further away from the relegation zone. Although they sit seventh with 27 points, the congested nature of the table means they are just four points clear, making a home victory crucial to their survival push.

This clash promises to be a tightly-contested affair, with both sides having plenty at stake.
