A group of Ghanaian athletes opened their 2026 indoor season with strong performances at the Javis Scott Invitational in Lubbock, Texas. The Championship, which drew competitors from several countries, saw the Ghanaians deliver solid results across running and field events.
Sprints
In the men’s 60 meters, Abdul Rasheed Saminu ran a personal best of 6.54 seconds. The time meets the standard for the World Athletics Indoor Championships scheduled to take place in Poland later this year. His teammate James Dadzie continued his fine indoor form, finishing in 6.62 seconds.
On the women’s side, Anita Africa clocked 7.43 seconds in the 60 meters, posting a competitive early-season time.
200 and 400 Meters
Deborah Acheampong led the Ghanaian women in the 200 meters with a time of 23.95 seconds. Asana Hamish followed at 24.71 seconds, while Sandra Appiah completed the race in 25.24 seconds.
Hamish and Appiah also competed in the 400 meters. Hamish crossed the line in 54.70 seconds, with Appiah close behind at 55.49 seconds.
For the men, William Opare ran 21.28 seconds in the 200 meters and returned later to post 47.67 seconds in the 400 meters. Benjamin Nsiah ran a strong 400 meters as well, finishing in 46.45 seconds.
Middle Distance and Distance
Mercy Angaamchaab ran 2:10.81 in the women’s 800 meters. Vanee Anchike completed the women’s mile in 4:48.91.
In the men’s 5000 meters, William Amponsah finished with a time of 14:09.96.
Hurdles
Doris Quainoo turned in a strong performance in the women’s 60-meter hurdles, stopping the clock at 8.23 seconds. In the men’s event, Joshua Taylor ran 7.83 seconds.
Field Events
Oyeyoni Oyewale-Johnson competed in the men’s triple jump, recording a mark of 15.31 meters.
The performances in Lubbock gave the Ghanaian Contingent a solid base as the season continues. With Abdul Rasheed Saminu already hitting the World Indoor Championships mark, several other athletes posted times that suggest they are on track for strong results in the months ahead.
The team will now look to build on these results as they work toward major competitions later in the year.
