GPL Match Preview: Hearts of Oak to begin GPL second round with a trip to Hohoe

Hearts of Oak begin the second round of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League with a tricky away assignment as they travel to the Volta Region to face Hohoe United at the Hohoe Sports Stadium today, with kick-off set for 3:30pm.

The Phobians arrive in Hohoe knowing that their recent form on the road remains a major concern.

Hearts are winless in their last five away matches, recording three draws and two defeats, and worryingly, they have failed to find the back of the net in all five games.

That barren run away from Accra has slowed their momentum, despite a relatively strong first-round campaign.

Currently sitting 5th on the league table with 28 points, Hearts are firmly within touching distance of the title-chasing pack.

With the Premier League crown having eluded them since 2021, a positive start to the second round could be crucial in shaping their ambitions. Victory in Hohoe would not only end their away-day struggles but also keep them within striking range of the summit.

Hohoe United, on the other hand, head into this fixture with survival firmly on their minds. The Volta Region side have slipped into the relegation zone and sit 17th with 18 points.

Their home form offers some encouragement, having managed three wins, four draws and only two defeats in nine home matches so far. That resilience at home will give them belief against one of the league’s traditional heavyweights.

For Hohoe United, the stakes are clear, only a win could lift them out of danger after this round of fixtures. Anything less may deepen their relegation worries as the second half of the season gets underway.

It is a meeting of two teams with contrasting objectives—Hearts chasing consistency and a late title push, Hohoe United fighting for survival. As both sides look to reset for the second round, the question remains: who needs the win more?

The answer will be revealed when the final whistle blows in Hohoe this afternoon.
