Henry Unconvinced by Cubarsi Red Card Decision

Former Arsenal and Barcelona striker, Thierry Henry has strongly criticized the red card issued to FC Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsi during their defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the quarter final tie at the Camp Nou.

Cubarsi, 19, was adjudged to have committed a last man foul, deemed to be denying a clear scoring opportunity on Giovanni Simeone. The defender was initially given a yellow card for the challenge but was upgraded to red following a VAR review.

Henry found no reason for Pau Cubarsi to receive his marching orders in the game during his assessment of the situation.

Cubarsi red card? “No, no, no… for me, that’s not a red card. I’m sorry.”

He went on to explain why despite being a last man tackle, the situation did not demand a sending off.

“I understand the rule. last man, denying a goal scoring opportunity, but you have to look at the situation.”

“The ball isn’t fully under control, the angle isn’t perfect, and there’s still distance to goal. Are we sure he’s scoring? I’m not convinced.”

Atleti capitalized on the numerical advantage and went on to take first leg win and poised for a place in the semifinals.
