Hon. Kofi Adams Inaugurates Committee for 2026 African Athletics Championships in Ghana

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Honorable Kofi Iddie Adams, has officially inaugurated a 10-member Local Organizing Committee (LOC). This committee will plan and oversee the 24th Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Senior Championships. The event will be held from May 10 to 17, 2026, at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The members of the committee are:

Farihan Alhassan (Managing Director, Ghana Commercial Bank) – Chairman

Bawah Fuseini (Ghana Athletics) – Member

Veronica Commey (National Sports Authority) – Member

Nathan Kwabena Anokye-Adisi (CEO, EIB Network) – Member

Nii Okyene Adjei (CEO, Thermenergy) – Member

Wilhelmina Asamoah (Chief Director, Ministry of Sports) – Member

Hon. Betty Krobby Mensah (Coordinator, National Recreation) – Member

Col. Tetteh (National Security) – Member

Godwin Arko Guun – Member

Falilatou Tchanile (International Representative) – Member

During the ceremony, Hon. Kofi Adams highlighted the importance of Ghana hosting the event. He stated, “We are privileged to host the African Senior Athletics Championship. This committee has the responsibility to plan effectively for over a thousand athletes.”

The President of Ghana Athletics, Mr. Bawah Fuseini, who is also a committee member, expressed confidence in a successful event. “On behalf of the LOC, we thank the Minister and the Ministry for their support. We are committed to delivering one of the best African championships in history,” he said.

The championships are expected to bring together the continent’s top athletes and distinguished guests, including the President of World Athletics, Lord Coe.

Ghana Athletics has assured the public of its readiness to host a successful event. The country won the hosting rights over Botswana in June 2024. Ghana plans to use the experience gained from hosting the successful 2023 African Games to ensure the 2026 athletics championships are also a major achievement. Officials are committed to providing excellent hospitality and also aim for a strong performance from Ghanaian athletes in the competition.
