“I Was Alone and Disrespected as Black Stars Captain” – Asamoah Gyan Cries
Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has expressed his frustration and sadness over the disrespect he endured during his tenure as skipper of the Ghanaian national team.
Speaking on a live social media broadcast, the legendary forward opened up about his challenging experiences and the lack of support he felt.
“I was alone and disrespected when I became the captain,” Gyan said. “The young ones who got call-ups were brainwashed, and people said bad things about me to them, which made them avoid talking to me.”
Nicknamed “Baby Jet,” Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals in over 100 appearances and is also the highest-scoring African in FIFA World Cup history.
Despite his remarkable achievements, he was visibly emotional as he recounted his struggles during his captaincy.
In 2019, Gyan’s position as captain was controversially handed to Andre Ayew by then-Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt. Ghana ultimately exited the tournament in the Round of 16 after losing to Tunisia on penalties.
Gyan, however, clarified that he holds no grudges against Andre Ayew, praising him for his dedication to the national team. “Andre played from his heart and was always willing to give his all for the national team,” Gyan said.
Asamoah Gyan remains a revered figure in Ghanaian football, but his revelations could spark discussions about player relationships and respect within the senior national team setup.
Despite the challenges he faced as Black Stars captain his legacy as one of Africa’s greatest strikers endures.
