Interim Manchester United coach Darren Fletcher delivered a stern message to his squad after their 2-1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, stating that players must prove they deserve to be at the club.
Speaking after the loss, which confirmed United’s exit from the competition, Fletcher pointed to tactical shortcomings and a fragile mentality.
“We didn’t play enough balls in behind and test them. You need to move the ball with tempo,” Fletcher said, analysing the performance. “We got back to 2-1 and the energy was up but ultimately we couldn’t get over the line. I think you can see the players are fragile. You need to dig deep.”
The match was further marred by a late red card for young winger Shea Lacey, a decision Fletcher strongly criticised. “It was poor refereeing, so I’ll take the yellow card [for responding], I can handle that,” he said.
With United’s season now lacking silverware, Fletcher emphasized the need for immediate unity and personal responsibility. He confirmed the club is set to appoint a new caretaker manager but stated his own immediate focus.
“I have to report tomorrow morning to Carrington, that’s all I know. I’ve had zero indication who’ll come in,” Fletcher revealed.
He then turned his attention squarely to the players, urging a collective response during a challenging period. “Someone is going to come in and lead them, they need to make sure they have a lot to play for this season. The biggest thing for me is that the group of players, whoever leads them, comes together.”
Fletcher’s remarks were his most direct, framing the remainder of the season as an audition for a future at Old Trafford.
“Difficult times… true character is going to show. They have to dig in and show they want to be part of Manchester United’s future and learn from this,” he stated.
“Ultimately, if you’re not, then I don’t think you should be here. That sounds strong, but that’s just the reality and how it should be.”
