Iran Suggest USA should be Stripped of 2026 World Cup Hosting Rights – But How Feasible Is It?

With just three months to the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a diplomatic and sporting storm appears to be brewing after Iran’s national team called for the United States to be stripped of its hosting rights in response to comments made by President Donald Trump.

The situation escalated after President Donald Trump warning Iran to stay away from the tournament amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. Iran’s top hierarchy responded with a strong statement insisting that they “cannot be removed” from the competition and suggesting that the United States should withdraw from hosting duties instead.

But while the rhetoric has intensified, the practical reality of removing the U.S. as host of the 2026 World Cup is far more complicated.

FIFA’s Authority Over the Tournament

The tournament is organised by FIFA, the global governing body of football, whose president Gianni Infantino has repeatedly stressed that the World Cup is an international sporting event rather than a political platform.

The 2026 edition of the tournament was awarded in 2018 to a joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico after a formal vote by FIFA member associations. This makes it the first World Cup to be hosted by three nations.

Most of the infrastructure, logistics and commercial agreements have been built around the United States hosting the majority of the matches, including the final. Cities across the country have spent years preparing stadiums, security systems and transport networks.

Removing the U.S. from hosting at this stage would require FIFA to completely redesign the tournament structure — an almost impossible task with only a few months remaining.

Scale of the Tournament

The 2026 World Cup will be the biggest in history, expanding to 48 teams and 104 matches. The United States alone is scheduled to host the bulk of the games, with venues already confirmed.

Moving those matches to alternative countries would require stadium availability, security planning, broadcasting arrangements and accommodation for millions of fans. Few countries currently may have the ready infrastructure to absorb that scale of competition on such short notice.

Even the co-hosts, Canada and Mexico, do not have the capacity to take on the full tournament without years of additional planning.

Political Tensions vs Football Governance

Iran’s reaction highlights the growing intersection between geopolitics and international sport. The conflict involving the United States, Iran and Israel has already created uncertainty around travel, security and diplomatic relations.

However, historically FIFA has been reluctant to relocate tournaments close to kickoff unless there are extreme logistical or safety failures. Even during periods of political tension, tournaments have proceeded in host nations with strict security arrangements.

What Could Actually Happen?

While stripping the U.S. of hosting rights appears highly unlikely, there are other scenarios FIFA could consider if tensions escalate:

Enhanced security measures for participating teams

Diplomatic guarantees for safe entry and movement of delegations

Neutral venues for specific matches if travel restrictions arise

FIFA mediation between governments to ensure participation

The governing body’s priority will be ensuring that all qualified teams can safely compete.

A Tournament Too Big to Move

Ultimately, Iran’s call reflects political frustration rather than a realistic pathway to changing the World Cup’s host.

With stadiums booked, sponsorship deals signed and millions of tickets expected to be sold, the 2026 tournament, scheduled to take place across the United States, Canada and Mexico, is simply too large to relocate at this late stage.

For now, the focus will likely remain on diplomacy and security rather than a dramatic reshaping of the biggest sporting event in the world.

If anything, the latest developments underline how global politics can cast a long shadow over even football’s grandest stage.
