Is he leaving? Enzo Fernandez expresses frustration at certain sporting decisions at Chelsea
Chelsea’s vice-captain Enzo Fernández has openly expressed his frustration with the club’s leadership following a chaotic spell that culminated in their heavy UEFA Champions League elimination at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain.
The Blues were emphatically dumped out of Europe’s elite competition with an 8-2 aggregate defeat, a result that has only intensified scrutiny on decision-making at the top level of the club.
Speaking in the aftermath, Fernández did not hold back, admitting that players have been left confused by certain moves most notably the departure of former head coach Enzo Maresca just six months after delivering both the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup titles.
“I don’t understand it either,” Fernández said. “Sometimes there are things that we as players don’t understand—how and in what way they try to manage things.”
The Argentine midfielder highlighted the emotional impact Maresca’s exit had on the squad, suggesting it disrupted a system that had begun to take shape under the Italian tactician.
“Obviously, it was a departure that hurt us a lot because we had an identity. He gave us an order,” Fernández explained. “Even though football has its ups and downs, he always had a very clear idea in training and in matches.”
According to Fernández, the timing of the managerial change—midway through the campaign—proved particularly damaging, halting momentum and leaving the squad in a state of uncertainty.
“His departure in the middle of the season cuts everything short,” he added.
Chelsea’s struggles this season now appear to reflect deeper structural issues beyond performances on the pitch, with Fernández’s comments offering a rare glimpse into dressing room sentiment.
As pressure mounts on the club’s hierarchy, questions will continue to be asked about the long-term vision at Stamford Bridge and whether stability can be restored moving forward given the club’s new model of operation which is in contrast to the Roman Abramovic era.
