Jordan Ayew struck late to secure a big win for Ghana in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali in Bamako on Thursday night.

Ghana went 1-0 down just on the stroke of half when Kamory Doumbia scored to give Mali the lead in the 45th minute.

However, the Black Stars fought back strongly after the recess, scoring two important goals to turn the tie in their favour.

Lyon Star, Ernest Nuamah grabbed the equalizer in the 58th minute after connecting perfectly to a Salis Samed cross at the far post to head home.

Jordan Ayew, introduced shortly before the 80th minute mark, stole the show as he pounced on a rebound in the Malians penalty box to score Ghana’s second at the death to secure a vital 3 points for the four-time AFCON champions.

Ayew’s late winner ensures that Ghana moves from 5th place to 2nd place in Group I with 6 points and only behind Comoros who play on Friday against Madagascar on head-to-head.

This win is even more significant for Ghana as they pick up their first win since November.

The Black Stars have put their qualification to the World Cup in 2026 back on track after a disappointing start to the qualifiers with a defeat and one win.

Otto Addo’s men will seek to take all 3 points once again when they face Central African Republic in the next game on Monday, June 10 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
