Joseph Paintsil Reflects on 2022 World Cup Snub, Sets Sights on Black Stars Future

Black Stars winger Joseph Paintsil has opened up on the disappointment of missing out on Ghana’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, admitting the decision left him unhappy but also strengthened his resolve to fight for future opportunities.

Speaking on Citi Sports’ Friday night programme, Sports Panorama, the Ghana international described his omission from the Qatar 2022 squad as a strange and difficult moment in his career.

“It was strange, and I was unhappy, but I always have to accept the decision of the coach. I was disappointed, but my job is to stay focused. There are more World Cups ahead, and my hope is to be part of the squad for this next one,” Paintsil said.

Paintsil, who had been part of Ghana’s squad during the qualification campaign, was widely tipped to make the final cut for the tournament. His exclusion therefore came as a surprise to many fans and pundits, especially given his pace, work rate, and ability to stretch defences from the flanks.

Despite the setback, the winger insists there is no bitterness, stressing that respect for the technical decisions of the coaching staff remains paramount. Instead of dwelling on the disappointment, Paintsil says he has channeled his energy into improving his performances at club level and maintaining consistency whenever he is called up to represent the national team.

The Black Stars endured a challenging campaign at the 2022 World Cup, exiting at the group stage after defeats to Portugal and Uruguay, with a lone victory over South Korea. For Paintsil, the experience served as further motivation to ensure he is not just selected, but fully prepared when the next opportunity arises.

As Ghana begins preparations for the next FIFA World Cup in USA, Canada, and Mexico, Paintsil’s comments reflect the mindset of a player determined to turn disappointment into motivation. With his pace, versatility, and growing experience, the winger remains hopeful that his perseverance will be rewarded with a place on football’s biggest stage next year.
